Cathy Ann Marvel Thompson
Cathy Ann Marvel Thompson, age 74, passed away in hospice care June 6, 2026. She was predeceased by her parents, Carlton “Pete” Marvel Jr. and Carolyn Marvel, and brother Carlton “Skip” Marvel III.
Cathy grew up in Easton, Md, earned her R.N. at the University of Maryland and entered the United States Army Nurse Corps as a Lieutenant in 1978. During her 5 years in the service, she was posted as a psychiatric nurse in Army hospitals in San Francisco, California and Wurzburg, Germany. When she was promoted to Captain her colleagues, who loved her kindness and wonderful smile, found humor in her answering the phone, “Captain Marvel.” Cathy was a super hero to all she served. Following honorable discharge, she continued to live in France for 17 years, while in the U.S. Army reserves, acting as U.S. military officer medical liaison with French and German military units, and rising to Lieutenant Colonel. Touched by events on September 11, 2001, Cathy chose to return to the United States, continuing to work as a psychiatric nurse. Cathy and Norval Thompson married in 2005.
Throughout her life Cathy sustained childhood friendships with Beverly Murphy Booth and Wanda Marvel and added many new ones. She and Norval traveled on their sailboat, C.C. Sunflower, in the Mediterranean, sharing her enthusiasm for Europe and travel. She is remembered for her sweet laugh, stylish dress, attention to everyone’s birthdays, punctuality, and social activities, including membership in Miles River Yacht Club and Third Haven Friends Meeting, Easton, Md.
Cathy Marvel Thompson is survived by her husband, Norval E. Thompson, brothers Keith and Bruce Marvel (Lisa); nephews: Scott Marvel (Kim), Drew Marvel; nieces: Alyssa Marvel, Emily Ireland (Jay), Catherine Houston (Kevin), Ashley Cannon (Ben), Brittany Wallace (Scott), Megan Marvel, Bobbi Waddell (Gary), Cheryl Pinder (Dale); stepchildren: Norval Thompson Jr., Sarah, and Cassidy, a host of grand nieces and nephews and goddaughter Cecile Belivent.
A Quaker Memorial Meeting for Worship will be held Saturday, June 27th at 10 a.m. at Third Haven Friends Meeting, 405 South Washington St. Easton, Md. 21601. All are welcome. Donations may be made to Third Haven Friends Meeting and Talbot Hospice.
