April's Book of the Month:
The biography of Elias Hicks "Quaker Liberal" is Library's committee's "Book of the Month" for April. Who is Elias Hicks? Was he solely responsible for the infamous split of the Religious Society of Friends? Was he a liberal? What did he believe? Read and find out!
New Additions:
Four new books have been added to our Meeting's library:
- "The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith" by Marcus J. Borg
For the millions of people who have turned away from many traditional beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Bible, but still long for a relevant, nourishing faith, Borg shows why the Christian life can remain a transforming relationship with God. Emphasizing the critical role of daily practice in living the Christian life, he explores how prayer, worship, Sabbath, pilgrimage, and more can be experienced as authentically life-giving practices. - "Occuped with Nonviolence: A Palestinian Woman Speaks" by Jean Zaru, clerk of Ramallah Friends Meeting in Palestine
Zaru vividly paints the complex realities faced by all parties in Palestine—Jews and Muslims and Christians, Israelis and Palestinians, women and men. Yet even as Zaru eloquently names the common misunderstandings of the history, present situation, and current policies of the parties there, she vividly articulates an alternative: a religiously motivated nonviolent path to peace and justice in the world's most troubled region. - "Sacred Compass: The Way of Spiritual Discernment", by J. Brent Bill
Sacred Compass offers a fresh and deeper way of living a God-directed life. J. Brent Bill draws on the quiet beauty of the Quaker path to show how spiritual discernment is more about sensing God's gracious presence than it is about making the right decisions. A member of Third Haven is quoted in this book... see if you can find out who! - "Spirit Rising: Young Quaker Voices", an anthology of Spirit-led writings of Young Adult Friends (ages 18-35)
Spirit Rising: Young Quaker Voices celebrates, critiques, questions, and reflects on the Quaker faith experience. Writing and visual art by teenage and young adult Quakers from around the world and across the theological and cultural spectrum of the Religious Society of Friends give readers a window on the spiritual riches and witness these Friends offer. The contributors in this volume challenge and inspire, as they witness to and celebrate Quakerism as it has been, as it is, and as it could yet be.
