From the Greater PA region of PYM’s Climate Action Network:

Have you wondered “What is this Greater PA region of the Climate Action Network?”

On June 4, 2005, Friends from throughout Philadelphia Yearly Meeting participated in a called session on climate change. One of the 4 major points raised up was to create a “climate action network” for PYM made up of 6 regions. Caln and Upper Susquehanna Quarters constitute the Greater PA region. Since that session in 2005, six to ten Friends from Caln and Upper Susquehanna have met faithfully by conference call. We discuss and address environmental issues such as: how we can affect pending legislation, projects we are involved in, efforts of our monthly meetings, Quaker Earthcare Witness projects, and more. We want to hear what is happening in your monthly meeting. To contribute news or get involved in this effort, contact Wade Wright (570-925-5708) or Marie Ryan (610-777-5825). The Epistle for PYM Called Session on Climate Change-June 4, 2005 is online at
http://www.pym.org/pm/comments.php?id=2177_0_45_0_C

Most people don’t realize that the standard incandescent lightbulbs they’ve been using for years are only 10% efficient; meaning only 10% of the electricity they use is transferred into light and the rest into heat! FACT: If every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb (CFL), in one year it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes. That would prevent the release of greenhouse gas emissions equal to that of about 800,000 cars. Saving electricity reduces CO2 emissions, sulfur oxide and high-level nuclear waste from power generation.

Service Project Idea: Lancaster Meeting (PA) worked with a local community service organization, the Crispus Attucks Center. The Meeting raised money to buy Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs and gave them to the Center. Crispus Attucks plans to use some bulbs at the Center and to give some to the families they serve (along with instruction on their value and how to dispose of them). To learn more about what your Monthly Meeting can do for the environment, see the article on PYM’s website titled “Advices For Responding To PYM’s Epistle On Climate Change” http://www.pym.org/pym_wgs/comments.php?id=4824_0_297_0_C

On Being a Spiritual Nurturer, 2009-2011

It is not too early to begin considering whether it is your time to apply for the next class of the School of the Spirit Ministry's two-year program “On Being a Spiritual Nurturer.” To help with your discernment, two one-day “Testing the Waters” retreats are being offered: February 7 at First Friends Meeting in Greensboro, NC, and March 28 at Alexandria Meeting in VA. The deadline for applications to the program is May 25, 2009. More information about the program can be found at www.schoolofthespirit.org There you can subscribe to the ministry's newsletter. To register for a “Testing the Waters” retreat, email info@schoolofthespirit.org The School of the Spirit Ministry is under the care of the Worship and Care Standing Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

Young Adult Friends Working Group Formed

A new Young Adult Friends Working Group is being formed under the care of the Education Standing Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. This group will strive to help provide vision for the PYM community of Young Adult Friends, season ideas and leadings, create events and opportunities for worship and fellowship, be a resource for Monthly Meetings in relation to YAFs, and work collaboratively with the PYM Young Adult Friends Coordinator.

The working group hopes to hold its meetings at Monthly Meetings on First Days, worshiping first with local Friends. Meetings will be held every other month beginning in January, with additional meetings scheduled when necessary for event planning. If you have questions about the new YAF Working Group, or would like to be involved, please contact PYM YAF Coordinator Sadie Forsythe at 215-241-7075 or sadief@pym.org

Grants for Young Adult Friends

The Friends Institute Granting Group of PYM strives to support and encourage young adult Friends, between the ages of 18 and 40, in ministry, service, witness and Quaker study. Grant requests are reviewed on a quarterly basis. The next application deadline is March 1, 2009.

The granting group has just revised their application guidelines. They are now accepting applications up to $1,000. Complete application information and a list of recent grant awards is available online at: http://www.pym.org/friendsinstitute/figg/index.htm

PDF flyers about applying for Friends Institute grants are available on this website. Print one off for a young adult you know, and post at your Friends Meeting! For more information about Friends Institute grants, contact PYM Young Adult Friends Coordinator Sadie Forsythe at 215-241-7075 or friendsinstitute@pym.org

PYM Offers 200 Pamphlets Free

Thanks to special PYM Publications Service Group funds, your Meeting can receive 200 free pamphlets of your choosing if your order is received by Friday, February 27, 2009. A special order form was sent to clerks of Monthly Meetings in December. Just fill in the quantities you want of each PYM pamphlet and return the form to QuakerBooks of Friends General Conference. Questions should be directed to Mary Anne Crowley at PYM, 215-241-7017 or maryc@pym.org

Shelving for Meeting Libraries

As the PYM Library is redesigned and moved within Friends Center, surplus metal bookshelves will be made available to Monthly Meeting libraries for a fraction of the original cost.

Have you thought about redesigning your Meeting Library or adding shelving? Now is a great time to consider it.

There will be some sections 78 inches high and some 90 inches high.  The 78” ones hold 6 shelves, and the 90” ones have 7 shelves (each about 1 foot high, but adjustable). The shelves can be single depth and attached to a wall or back-to-back free standing.

If your Meeting has even the slightest interest, contact PYM Librarian Rita Varley at 215-241-7219 or ritav@pym.org  See if you can find a way to take advantage of this opportunity.

Parking at Arch Street

Friends wishing to use the parking lot at the Fourth and Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia for personal business (when not attending meetings there) should obtain an annual permit. The fee is $150 for the calendar year.

2009 parking tags are now available from the PYM Business and Finance Department at Friends Center. Please note: Parking tags will no longer be issued from the Arch Street Meeting House.

If you have a 2008 tag, you will be notified by mail for renewal. For all others, please send inquiries to Jess Purvis, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102. Email: JessP@pym.org

Publications Service Group looking for a few good Friends

Friends with editorial skills, and those with knowledge of Quaker history, are invited to join the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting publishing program.

Publications Service Group develops materials to meet Meetings’ needs and keep various Quaker classics in print. At present, we oversee the final production and marketing of Faith and Practice, curricula and other works sponsored by PYM committees, pamphlets, and the Arch Street Lecture Series. We also contribute to the development of PYM’s website.

We work with other Quaker publishers to produce publications such as the Journal of George Fox and Whispers of Faith. We are exploring new technologies like print-on-demand that allow reprinting short runs. We are working on general information for visitors at Arch Street Meeting House, Friends Center and other Quaker sites.

Interested Friends should email lairdh@fgcquaker.org. Publications Service Group meets once a month in the evening at a location best suited to the group.

Website Offers International Quaker Community

Quaker Faith and Fellowship is a new website presence at http://www.quakerfaithandfellowship.org

This Friendly cyberspace community offers online Meeting for Worship with a “Coffee & Tea room” for after-meeting discussions and a Forum for informal discussions.

Organizers are praying that others from around the world will come to their site and take on responsibilities for the scheduling of online Meetings for Worship in the hope that all those who are isolated for one reason or another will have the opportunity through the Internet to unite with others for spiritual nourishment.

Writing and Art Workshops for Quaker Youth

Quaker Youth Book Project editorial board members have designed workshops on writing and art that encourage reflection, creative work, and written and visual ministry by young Friends ages 15-35. The workshops draw upon the writings of historic Friends, Bible verses, other writers, artists, and creative writing techniques. They will help young Friends in your Meeting, church, youth group or school to reflect on their lives, faith and witness in the world as Friends.

The submission of work developed in a workshop to the Quaker Youth Book Project is not required -- but it is certainly encouraged!

Editorial board members and Friends from Quakers Uniting in Publications (QUIP) may be available to lead these workshops in person. If no one is available, we will work with and support young Friends, youth workers and teachers so that they can facilitate the workshops themselves. E-mail quipyouthbook@gmail.com if you are interested. More information at

Pendle Hill's Winter Lecture Series:

Practical Choices that Support Faithful Living

Friends are invited to attend Pendle Hill's winter Tuesday Evening Lecture Series, "Finding the Way: Practical Choices that Support Faithful Living." The free lectures are scheduled for January 13 through March 3, 2009, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Barn at Pendle Hill, 338 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, PA.

Presenters include Erin McDougall (January 13), Jorge Arauz (January 20), Elizabeth Gordon (January 27), Mary Wade (February 3), Jens Braun (February 10), Cathy Draine (February 17), Elaine Emily (February 24), and Barbarajene Williams (March 3). Their presentations concern fundamental issues many Friends face:

• How can we be spiritually faithful when so much of our attention is necessarily focused on practical concerns like eating, cleaning, health, and worrying about finances?

• When we have so much to worry about, how can we pay attention to what God is calling us to do?

• How can we be of service to the world?

Hear about challenges the speakers have faced, choices they have made, and lessons they have learned as they have sought to walk faithfully along the path of a living ministry.

Detailed information is available at www.pendlehill.org. For more information or to request a flier, contact Walter Hjelt Sullivan, ext. 160 at (610) 566-4507 or (800) 742-3150. wsullivan@pendlehill.org

Friends House, Moscow makes visits to Tbilisi, is translating Quaker literature into Georgian and supports a Moscow center for people from the Caucasus, often targets for violence and discrimination. See http://fhm.quaker.org/

Patricia Stewart, who worked at Friends House, Moscow this summer with a minute for religious service from Central Philadelphia Meeting, would be happy to visit Meetings to report further on what Friends are doing in the former USSR. Write pkss703975@aol.com

Pendle Hill Offers Weekends on Quaker Basics: Clerking, Recording, Outreach, and the Peace Testimony

A participant in a recent "how-to" weekend at Pendle Hill wrote, "I came to the workshop hoping for some 'tools' for the toolbox and left with the hardware store!" Many Friends serving their meetings as clerks, recording clerks, and committee members find it useful to add to their "toolbox" through workshops with Friends called to the same service. This winter Pendle Hill is offering several workshops with experienced leaders on Quaker meeting essentials:

"Meeting Growth and Revitalization," January 30-February 1 with Deborah Haines (co-sponsored by the Advancement and Outreach Committee of Friends General Conference); and

"Clerking," February 6-8 with Iowa Yearly Meeting (Conservative) clerks Deborah Fisch and Bill Deutsch. For more information visit www.pendlehill.org or call 1-800-742-3150, ext. 3. Pendle Hill will match grants from meetings to help enable Friends to attend these workshops.

January 17        Peace Gathering to Address Gun Violence

Planning for “Heeding God’s Call” -- the peace gathering in Philadelphia that has become a joint effort of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the Church of the Brethren and the Mennonite Church USA -- has been proceeding in exciting directions.

On Saturday, January 17, the Gathering will expand to include people of faith from around the Delaware Valley. Our expectation is that approximately 2,000 people will participate. Morning programs will take place at multiple faith communities. After a simple lunch, all will gather at the church called Holy Ghost Headquarters (“the Met”) at 858 North Broad Street for a concluding plenary session, cumulating with a public witness.

In preparation for this program of shared worship and public witness, 30 faith communities in the Delaware Valley area are engaged in praying, learning, teaching and planning together. Specifically, they will be working to educate and equip members of local faith communities to reduce gun violence in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, through direct action to encourage responsible gun laws and sales. The focus of the public witness will be the “call” of the local faith communities for gun shop owners to partner with the community to make illegal and bulk purchases of handguns far less likely. Gun shop owners will be called to agree to a 10-point “Code of Conduct” fashioned after the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership that was recently negotiated between the Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and a major nationwide retailer of firearms (Wal-Mart).

Information on the peace gathering is available online at www.peacegathering2009.org.
